Bleeding hearts form substantial root systems (thick, carrot-like roots or rhizomes) and do not like being cramped, so a roomy pot helps. Ensure the pot has drainage holes; good drainage is a must to prevent waterlogging and root rot​. 

You can use any pot material (plastic, ceramic, or terra cotta), but note that unglazed terra cotta will dry out faster (which can help avoid overwatering), whereas plastic/glazed pots hold moisture longer. In either case, drainage and careful watering are key.

For the soil, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. Bleeding hearts prefer a moist, humus-rich soil that is loose and airy. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal (around 6.0–7.0)​.

Indoors, it’s actually recommended to position a bleeding heart slightly away from the window rather than right on the sill, so it receives bright light without the risk of scorch or excessive heat​.

Signs of correct lighting: Healthy bleeding heart foliage is medium green and the plant stands upright. Buds and flowers will form on arching stems in spring if light is adequate.

The soil should feel damp like a wrung-out sponge – not sopping and not bone dry. Bleeding heart roots should neither dry out completely nor sit in standing water​.

When watering, try to water the soil at the base of the plant and avoid splashing the foliage. Gently pour water near the edge of the pot or use a watering can with a long spout to direct water into the soil. 

Keeping water off the leaves is important because wet foliage in a humid, indoor environment can encourage fungal diseases (like powdery mildew or leaf spot)​.

Wilting is a telltale sign the plant is thirsty: if you see the leaves drooping and the soil is dry to the touch, water promptly. They usually perk back up after a good drink.

On the other hand, be careful not to overwater. Symptoms of overwatering or waterlogged soil include yellowing leaves (not related to normal dormancy) and a wilting that doesn’t improve after watering – this could indicate root rot. 

If you accidentally let the plant sit in excess water or watered too frequently, the roots might suffocate. In that case, allow the soil to dry out a bit and adjust your schedule going forward. 

Always ensure that the top layer of soil has dried slightly before the next watering. Consistent moisture is ideal, but soggy conditions are dangerous​​.

Dormancy note: Later in the season, when the bleeding heart begins to go dormant (more on that in the Growth Cycle section), you will reduce watering. As the plant yellows and dies back, it will use less water.

Try to avoid exposing your indoor bleeding heart to heat above ~80°F for prolonged periods, as excess heat can reduce flowering and speed up dormancy​. In a typical home, normal room temps are fine, but pay attention 

in summer if you don’t have air conditioning – a heat wave could stress the plant. Likewise, keep the plant away from direct heaters or hot, sunny windows that can create hot spots​. 

If it’s near a window, ensure it’s not getting blasted by hot afternoon sun or trapped behind a curtain in heat. Drafts of cold air (like a frequently opened door in winter) or hot air (heater vents) can also cause stress, so a stable, moderate temperature location is best.

At night, bleeding hearts can handle cooler drops. In fact, they are frost-hardy when grown outdoors (hardy to USDA Zone 3, which means they tolerate freezing when dormant). 

While you don’t need to chill your house to those levels, it means the plant won’t mind if winter nighttime temps in your home dip into the 50s°F. Cool nights and moderate days are generally beneficial and mimic their natural environment. 

During the dormant winter phase, it’s even fine (and in some cases desirable) to let the plant rest in a cool spot, say around 40–50°F, if you have a basement or unheated room (more on overwintering later). 

The main thing is to avoid extreme heat or extreme, prolonged cold indoors.

In terms of humidity, bleeding hearts can tolerate a range of indoor humidity levels​, but they do appreciate higher humidity if possible. Coming from woodland habitats with moisture in the air, they will thrive in moderate humidity. 

Average home humidity (around 30-50%) is usually okay, but if your air is very dry (especially in winter with central heating), consider boosting the humidity around the plant​​. You might notice crispy brown leaf edges or an increased risk of spider mites if humidity is too low. 

To raise humidity, you can place the pot on a tray of pebbles with water (ensure the pot sits on the pebbles above the water, not in it, to increase ambient moisture), run a humidifier in the room, or cluster the bleeding heart with other houseplants (groups of plants create a slightly more humid microclimate). 

Even simple steps like not placing the plant directly in front of a heating vent will help, as those vents dry the air quickly.

Bleeding hearts are often likened to ferns in their humidity preference – they enjoy a humid atmosphere to keep foliage lush​. 

If you see the air is dry, lightly misting the plant can add temporary moisture, but do it in the morning so the leaves dry by evening (to prevent fungal issues). However, remember not to leave the leaves wet for long periods. 

Usually, maintaining humidity around 50-60% is great. If that’s not possible, don’t worry – they can still do fine in standard conditions, as long as other factors (like watering) are well-managed. Just be vigilant for any signs of stress that could be alleviated by a bit more humidity.

In summary, keep your bleeding heart in a cool, comfortable spot in your home – not too hot, not too dry. Think “spring day in the woods” conditions. By managing temperature and humidity, you set the stage for healthy growth and avoid problems like bud drop or pest infestations.

 

Feeding and Fertilization

Bleeding heart plants are not heavy feeders in the ground, but potted plants benefit from some regular feeding since nutrients in potting soil get used up or washed out over time. 

The goal is to support flowering and foliage growth without overdoing it (excess fertilizer can burn the plant or cause lots of leaves but few flowers). Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer or a slow-release granular fertilizer suitable for flowering houseplants. 

A diluted liquid fertilizer applied about once a month during the active growing season works well​​. For example, you could use an all-purpose 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 formula at half the recommended strength, feeding the plant monthly in spring and early summer. 

If you prefer, you can instead mix a slow-release fertilizer into the topsoil at the beginning of the growing season (when new growth appears)​​. This slow-release type will gradually feed the plant for a few months. Always follow the product instructions so you don’t accidentally over-fertilize.

Watch your plant: if the foliage is a healthy green and it blooms nicely, you’re giving it enough nutrients. Pale or yellowish new leaves (not related to overwatering or dormancy) could indicate nutrient deficiency – in that case, a feeding might be in order.

Unlike evergreen houseplants, bleeding hearts are herbaceous perennials that have an active growing phase and a dormant phase each year. Here’s what to expect and how to manage it:

  • Spring (Active Growth & Blooming)

    Alternatively, you can wipe the leaves and stems with a mild soapy water. Repeat treatment weekly until aphids are gone. Also, check any nearby houseplants, as aphids can spread.
  • Spider Mites: These are tiny spider-like pests that thrive in dry indoor air. They often go unnoticed until you see fine webbing or stippled, speckled leaves (tiny yellow or brown spots where the mites have sucked the juices).
    If your bleeding heart is in a very dry spot, keep an eye out for mites, especially on the underside of leaves. To combat spider mites, first increase humidity around the plant (they hate moist air).
    You can also rinse the foliage under water to knock them off. Insecticidal soap or neem oil can help here too.
    Again, test first. Regularly misting the plant (in morning) or rinsing it off can keep spider mite populations down. Removing badly infested leaves and discarding them can also help.
  • Mealybugs: These appear as white, cottony blobs often lodged in leaf joints or on stems. They suck sap and excrete sticky residue.
    If you find a few, dab them with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to dissolve their protective coating, then wipe them off.
    For larger infestations, insecticidal soap or neem oil spray works (with the usual caution to test on bleeding heart’s foliage).
    Mealybugs can hide in the soil too – check the base of the plant. Sometimes systemic insecticides (granules in soil) are used, but try gentler methods first.
  • Scale Insects: Scale can appear as small brown or tan bumps on stems or the undersides of leaves. They are related to mealybugs and also suck sap.
    The treatment is similar: you can scrape them off gently or use alcohol on a swab for small areas, or apply insecticidal soap/neem if widespread​. Scale often has a hard shell, so multiple treatments may be needed as new young scale (crawlers) hatch.
  • Slugs and Snails: These are typically outdoor pests that love bleeding heart leaves. Indoors you normally won’t encounter slugs/snails unless you moved the plant outside or perhaps had eggs in the soil.
    If you do see telltale slime trails or chewed holes and find a slug/snail, hand-pick it off. Slugs are nocturnal, so you might check at night with a flashlight. Remove them and you can place them outside or dispose of them.
    Outdoors, gardeners often use beer traps or pet-safe slug bait. But inside, it’s uncommon to have this issue unless you summer your plant outdoors​.
  • Fungus Gnats: If the soil is kept very moist, those little black gnats that fly out when you water could appear. They are more of an annoyance than a threat to a large plant (their larvae nibble on roots, but usually only harm seedlings).
    To manage fungus gnats, let the top of the soil dry more between waterings, use sticky traps to catch adults, or place a layer of sand or gravel on top of the soil to deter egg-laying. You can also water with a Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTi) product (often sold as mosquito bits soaked in water) to kill larvae.

Diseases:

Bleeding Heart Plant Diseases.

  • Powdery Mildew: This is a fungal disease that looks like white or gray powdery patches on leaves​. It can occur in high humidity and low airflow situations. |
    If you see powdery mildew, remove the most affected leaves and improve air circulation around the plant (maybe a small fan nearby, or simply less crowding).
    You can treat remaining foliage with a fungicide labeled for powdery mildew or even a homemade remedy like a baking soda solution (1 tsp baking soda, a few drops of dish soap, and a quart of water) sprayed on leaves​​.
    Make sure to spray at a time when the plant can dry off and is not in bright light (to avoid leaf burn). In future, avoid getting leaves wet and keep humidity moderated to prevent mildew.
  • Leaf Spot (fungal): This shows up as brown or black spots on leaves, often with a yellow halo around them​. Over time, spots may merge and the leaves may die. It’s caused by various fungi.
    If you notice this, promptly remove and dispose of affected leaves. You can use a general fungicide to stop the spread. Also ensure you’re not wetting the foliage when watering, as moisture spreads leaf spot. Good airflow is again helpful.
  • Root Rot: As discussed, overly wet soil can lead to roots decaying. This isn’t a visible “disease” on leaves at first, but you may notice the plant wilting even when soil is wet, or a foul odor from the soil.
    If you suspect root rot, gently unpot the plant and check the roots.
    Healthy roots are whitish and firm; rotten roots are brown/black, slimy, or mushy and may fall apart. Minor root rot can sometimes be addressed by trimming away rotten parts, then repotting the plant into fresh, dry potting mix with good drainage.
    Add some perlite to improve aeration. Water sparingly until it recovers. If the root rot is extensive (all/most roots gone), the plant may not recover – at that point, propagation might be the only chance (try to take some cuttings if any stems are still healthy, see propagation section).
    Prevent root rot by never letting the pot sit in water and by using the proper soil mix and pot with drainage.
  • Wilts (Verticillium or Fusarium wilt): These are serious fungal diseases that infect the plant’s vascular system. A plant with wilt disease may suddenly wilt, turn brown or black, and collapse even if it was watered – it looks like a severe, rapid rot from the inside out​.
    Unfortunately, if your bleeding heart gets a wilt disease, there is no cure and the plant usually dies quickly​.
    These diseases often come from contaminated soil or were latent in the plant. Indoors it’s rare unless you used garden soil or the plant was infected from the nursery.
    If it does happen (the plant turns black, foul-smelling, or wilts and rots very fast​​), the best action is to remove and destroy the plant and soil to prevent spread.
    Dispose of it in a sealed bag in the trash (do not compost). Sterilize the pot with bleach solution before using it for any other plant​​.
  • Botrytis (Gray mold): This can affect bleeding hearts especially on cool, damp conditions. It looks like a gray, fuzzy mold on leaves, stems, or flowers​. If you see moldy growth, remove the affected parts and treat with a fungicide.
    Increase ventilation and reduce humidity around the plant for a while. Often botrytis attacks aging or dead tissues, so keeping the plant cleaned of dead leaves/flowers helps prevent it.

General disease prevention: Keep your plant’s environment clean. Remove fallen leaves, use clean tools, and if you’ve had disease issues before, consider a fresh soil repot to start clean. 

Also, when moving the plant outdoors for summer (if you choose to) or bringing it back in, inspect for pests and don’t let it get rained on too much (outdoor rain plus heat can encourage fungal issues). 

The NC State Extension notes that providing adequate water (but not overwatering) can extend the time before the plant goes dormant and help keep foliage healthy​, but overly wet soil will invite disease. 

It’s a balance. Indoors, because you control the watering, you can prevent a lot of rot by being moderate with water and ensuring drainage.

Luckily, many bleeding heart owners find few pest or disease problems if the plant is kept in good conditions​. 

A healthy plant is the best defense. Regularly inspect your bleeding heart when you water it – look under leaves, along stems, and at the soil surface. Catching any issue early makes it much easier to treat. With vigilance and good care, your plant will likely stay mostly pest-free and any problems can be managed promptly.

 

Propagation (Making New Bleeding Heart Plants)

If you’d like to create more bleeding heart plants or rejuvenate an older one, you can propagate it through division or cuttings (or even seeds, but we’ll focus on division and cuttings as requested). Both methods are suitable for Lamprocapnos spectabilis and can be done by beginners with a bit of care.

 

Propagation by Division

Division is the easiest and most common way to propagate a bleeding heart. It involves splitting an established plant’s root clump into two or more sections, each of which can grow into a new plant. 

Division not only creates new plants but also helps an older potted bleeding heart by giving its roots more room (preventing it from becoming root-bound and reinvigorating its growth). 

Bleeding hearts tend to form larger clumps over a couple of years, so dividing every 2–3 years is often recommended​.

When to divide: The best times to divide a bleeding heart are either in early spring (just as new growth begins to peek out) or in early fall (after the plant’s foliage has died back)​​. If you are growing it indoors, you can time it with its dormancy. 

For example, you might remove it from its pot and divide in late winter before it starts actively growing (when you’re about to bring it out of dormancy), or right after it has gone dormant and been cut back in the fall. 

Early spring is generally preferred because the plant is about to grow vigorously and will recover faster. Avoid dividing while it’s in full leaf and flowering, as that can stress the plant more.

How to divide:

  1. Unpot the Plant.
    Carefully remove the bleeding heart from its potCarefully remove the bleeding heart from its pot. If it’s large, you may need to gently tip the pot and ease the root ball out.
    You might see thick roots circling around – be as gentle as possible to minimize breakage, but some broken roots are inevitable and usually fine.
  2. Separate the Roots.

    Decide how many divisions you want (typically splitting one plant into 2 or 3 sections is manageable). Using your hands, or a clean sharp knife/spade, divide the root mass.
    Try to ensure each division has at least one or two strong buds/eyes and a good section of roots attached​.
    Sometimes you can pull sections apart naturally along where the plant seems to have formed offsets; other times you may cut directly. If cutting, a straight cut through the root ball is fine.
  3. Trim and Prep.

  4. Replant the Divisions.

    Choose pot sizes appropriate for each division (they might not need as large a pot as the original if you split it; e.g., if one plant was in a 12-inch pot and you split it in half, each half might go into an 8–10 inch pot).
    Plant each division so that its crown is about 1 inch below the soil surface (just covered)​ – the buds can be just peeking at or slightly under the surface.
  5. Water and Wait.
    Water the newly potted divisionsWater the newly potted divisions thoroughly to settle soil around the roots. Keep them in a shaded, cool area initially (no intense sun) and keep the soil lightly moist consistently for the next few weeks as they establish.
    They may not sprout new top growth immediately if you did this in fall – in that case, they’ll remain dormant until the next spring. If you divided in spring, you should see new shoots continue growing pretty quickly.
    The plant might be a bit stunned the first year after division – perhaps smaller or fewer blooms – but by the next growth cycle it will be fully recovered.

Tip: Division is best done on a healthy, robust plant. Don’t try to divide a very young plant (wait at least until it’s a couple years old or has a sizable root mass) or a plant that is weak or diseased. 

Also, after dividing, you can give the divisions a dose of diluted fertilizer once you see active growth, to help them along (but not too strong, since the fresh root cuts can be sensitive). Dividing should ideally be done infrequently – each plant likes some time to settle and expand.

Propagating bleeding hearts from stem cuttings is another way to get new plants. It can be surprisingly successful if done correctly, though it requires a bit more patience and care than division. You’ll essentially be cloning the plant from pieces of its stems.

When to take cuttings: The optimal time to take softwood cuttings of bleeding heart is right after the plant has finished flowering, when there is fresh new growth that’s not too woody​. Typically, this means late spring to early summer, when stems are still green and pliable. 

Stems should be mature enough to not be flimsy, but young enough to bend and not snap (that’s what “softwood” implies). Early morning is a great time to take cuttings because the plant is well-hydrated then​.

 

How to take and root cuttings:

  1. Prepare Pot and Medium.
    Get a small pot or a tray ready with a well-draining rooting mediumGet a small pot or a tray ready with a well-draining rooting medium. A good mix is half peat moss (or coco coir) and half perlite or coarse sand​.
    This mixture will hold some moisture but stay airy. Moisten the mix so it’s damp but not soggy, and fill your pot. Ensure the pot has drainage. You can even pre-insert a few holes with a pencil where cuttings will go, to avoid stressing them later.
  2. Select Cuttings: Using a clean, sharp scissors or pruners, cut healthy new shoots about 3 to 5 inches (8–13 cm) long​. Choose stems that do not have flower buds (or if they do, snip off the buds, as those focus energy away from rooting).
    A cutting should have a couple of leaf nodes (points where leaves attach). Cut just below a node, because that’s where roots are likely to form.
  3. Strip Lower Leaves.
    Remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cuttingRemove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting​, leaving maybe one or two pairs of leaves at the top. This reduces water loss and focuses the cutting on root development.
  4. Optional – Dip in Rooting Hormone.

    It’s helpful to use sticks, straws, or wire hoops to hold the plastic up off the leaves so it doesn’t touch them​.
    Ensure some air can circulate – you can poke a couple of small holes in the plastic or open it briefly every day. If too much condensation builds up (water dripping inside), vent it a bit​, because overly wet conditions can cause the cuttings to rot.
  7. Light and Temperature.
    Place the pot in bright, indirect light, not direct sun (which can overheat the cuttings under the plastic)​.
    An indoor spot with good light but no direct sun is ideal, or use a fluorescent light a little distance away. Maintain a warm temperature of about 65–75°F (18–24°C) for rooting​. Do not let it drop much below 60°F at night​, as cold can stall or kill the cuttings.
  8. Monitoring.
    Check the cuttings daily. The goal is to keep the medium moist but not soggy. You likely won’t need to water for a week or two if it’s sealed, but if it’s drying out, add a bit of water (spritzing the soil, not the leaves, is good).
    If you see any mold or rot, remove that cutting and ensure better ventilation. After about 1–2 weeks, gently tug one cutting – if you feel resistance, roots may be forming.
  9. Rooting Time.
    Usually, bleeding heart cuttings root in about 10 to 21 days under good conditions​. New leaf growth is a positive sign that rooting has occurred​. Once you clearly see new growth or roots poking out of drainage holes, it means success.
  10. Potting Up.
    Remove the plastic cover once the cuttings are rootedRemove the plastic cover once the cuttings are rooted and acclimate them to normal humidity gradually (first a few hours without cover, then more each day).
    Then, transplant each rooted cutting into its own pot with regular potting mix​. Handle them gently, trying not to break the delicate new roots. Water them in their new pots and care for them as you would a young bleeding heart plant.

Not every cutting will take, so don’t be discouraged if you lose a couple. Take a few extra to be safe. Once potted, the new plants may remain small their first year and perhaps may not bloom until the following season – that’s normal, as they establish their roots.

Propagation by cuttings is a fun way to multiply a favored variety (since cuttings will be clones of the parent, they’ll have the same flower color, etc.). It’s also useful if you want to have indoor bleeding hearts that you eventually plant outside or give to friends. 

Bonus: Bleeding hearts can also be grown from seed, but seeds need a cold stratification (chilling) period and can take longer to reach flowering, so cuttings and division are faster ways to get flowering-size plants​.

 

Seasonal Indoor Care Tips (Overwintering & Dormancy)

Caring for a bleeding heart plant indoors through the seasons involves adjusting to its needs during active growth and during dormancy, as we’ve touched on. 

Here are some additional seasonal tips and emphasis on overwintering and reviving a dormant plant in an indoor setting:

  • Spring Indoor Care.
    This is the time your indoor bleeding heart comes back to life. As new growth appears, move the plant into a bright location if it wasn’t there already. Ensure it’s getting enough light to fuel growth and budding.
    Spring is also when you’ll resume regular watering (keeping soil moist) and start feeding monthly. If the plant was in a very cool spot, bring it to a normal room temperature to encourage faster growth.
    Watch the growth – stems can elongate quickly. If needed, rotate the pot occasionally so it grows evenly (stems may lean toward the light source).
    You might also take the opportunity in early spring to repot the plant if it has been a few years (or to divide, as discussed). Repotting is best done at the beginning of the growth cycle so the plant can recover and fill the new soil with roots.
    Supporting blooms: When buds form, you can give a dose of bloom fertilizer and ensure no sudden changes (don’t let it dry out or get blasted by heat as that might abort buds). Spring is the most enjoyable phase – your plant will be at its showiest.
  • Summer (Managing Indoor Dormancy).
    As the season progresses and if indoor temperatures climb, be prepared for the plant to yellow.
    One way indoor growers manage bleeding hearts is to actually move them outdoors in late spring to a shady, cool spot so they can grow and bloom in a more natural environment, then allow dormancy with the outdoor conditions, and later bring the pot back in.
    If you do this, ensure you transition gradually (harden it off to outdoor conditions, avoid direct sun) and bring it back inside once it starts to go dormant or before any extreme weather (see next point).
    If keeping it indoors all summer, once it yellows, follow the dormancy routine: cut back the dead stems and place the pot somewhere cool and out of the way.
    In an air-conditioned home, you might simply put it in an unobtrusive corner or a basement room. If you lack a cool spot, at least put it in the dark (like a closet) to discourage premature resprouting.
    Reduce watering to the minimal level needed (once every few weeks) during summer dormancy.
    Essentially, treat it like a resting bulb/rhizome. The plant “wants” a resting phase after blooming – forcing it to keep growing leaves through summer usually isn’t successful because it naturally fades; better to let it sleep.
  • Fall Overwintering.
    By fall, your bleeding heart likely has been dormant for a while (it might have gone dormant in mid-summer). As outdoor gardeners would, think of fall as the time the plant is hunkered down.
    If you had your plant outside, definitely bring it indoors before frost if it’s in a pot, because while bleeding hearts are hardy, a potted plant can freeze solid which can damage roots and crack pots.
    A good method to overwinter if you have multiple pots is to put them in an unheated garage or shed where it stays cold but not below about 28°F/-2°C (to avoid the soil freezing too hard).
    For a single indoor plant, keeping it in any cool room is fine. Some experts suggest an optimal overwintering temperature range of around 35–50°F to mimic winter. In the UK or similar climates, an unheated spare room or loft might be around that range.
    If you don’t have a cool spot, it’s not a deal-breaker – the plant should still come back as long as it had a dormancy period and was kept on the dry side for a few months.
    In fall, water very rarely – maybe once a month as noted – since the cold and the plant’s inactivity mean it uses little water.
    Ensure the pot is not getting rained on or anything if stored in a shed (keep it relatively dry). Also protect it from nibbling pests (mice sometimes chew on stored bulbs/tubers, though bleeding heart is poisonous, so animals usually leave it alone).
  • Late Winter Revival.
    As winter wanes, check on your dormant plant. You’re looking for small pink or white buds at the soil surface. If you see them, that’s a sign the bleeding heart is ready to grow.
    Even if you don’t, by late winter (say February), you can start waking it up. Bring the pot into warmth (room temp) and light. Begin to water a bit more frequently – not drenching, but making the soil slightly moist.
    Within a few weeks, you should see shoots emerging if they haven’t already. If the plant was in the dark, bring it into light as soon as any growth appears, so the stems green up properly.
    Resume a normal watering schedule as new foliage expands, and begin fertilizing about a month after it breaks dormancy (or at first sign of buds).

    If by mid-spring nothing has happened, gently check the crown for any sign of life (scratch the crown – if it’s firm and maybe has some pink inside, it might be alive; if it’s mushy or totally desiccated, it may have died during dormancy).
    Assuming it survived (it usually will with minimal care), it will restart the cycle.

    As mentioned, one strategy some indoor gardeners use is to give the plant a “vacation” outdoors during its growing season, then bring it in for dormancy.
    If you decide to put your bleeding heart outside for part of the year (say from mid-spring to early summer), treat it like you would in a garden: place it in shade/partial shade (no direct hot sun)​, keep up with watering (natural rain might help but ensure it doesn’t get waterlogged​), and protect it from slugs/snails.
    Monitor temperatures – if it’s consistently above 75°F, the plant might start yellowing (dormancy)​​. You can bring it back inside once that happens or if outdoor conditions become too hot or drop below 55°F at night​.
    Always inspect for bugs before bringing it in so you don’t invite pests indoors​. This outdoor stint can sometimes give stronger growth due to better light and airflow, but it’s optional. Many people successfully grow bleeding hearts entirely indoors year-round.

General Troubleshooting Tips

Even with the best care, you might encounter some issues or questions while growing a bleeding heart indoors. Here are common problems and how to address them, especially focusing on yellowing leaves, lack of blooms, and wilting:

Why are my bleeding heart’s leaves turning yellow? This is one of the most common questions. First, determine the timing and pattern of the yellowing:

  • Seasonal Dormancy (Normal): If the yellowing is happening in late spring or early summer after the plant has bloomed, and the plant is gradually yellowing from the bottom up, it is very likely normal dormancy.
    Bleeding heart foliage naturally turns yellow and dies back as temperatures rise and summer arrives​. In this case, the yellowing is not a sign of a problem at all – it’s just the plant entering its rest phase.
    The proper response is to reduce watering, allow the plant to die back, and then trim off the yellowed stems (as described in pruning) once they’re mostly dead. You’ll then follow the dormancy care instructions.
    Do not fertilize or try to force the plant to stay green at this stage; it’s doing what it’s supposed to do. Think of it like a tulip’s leaves yellowing after bloom – a normal process.
  • Overwatering/Root Problems: If yellowing occurs out of season (for example, your plant is supposed to be in active growth but leaves are yellowing prematurely) or the yellow leaves are accompanied by a wilty appearance, the cause may be too much water leading to unhappy roots.
